The final day of the 33rd annual St. Maarten Heineken Regatta closed in outstanding fashion last evening at the traditional prizegiving ceremony – followed by an evening of world-class musical entertainment, headlined by the Grammy winning Motown legends, The Commodores-on Kim Sha Beach.

The evening’s top prize-the St. Maarten Cup-for the regatta’s Most Worthy Performance Overall went to Mark Plaxton’s Melges 32, Team INTAC, the winner of the event’s highly competitive sport boat class, CSA 8. Plaxton’s team did not lose a race in capturing the division, comprised largely of Melges 32s and 24s.”It’s a real honor to receive this award,” said Plaxton, who is based in the BVI and whose crew included Canadian Olympic sailor Richard Clarke and St. Thomas native Taylor Canfield. That same trio of Canfield, Clarke and Plaxton actually kicked off their highly successful week of sailing off St. Maarten by winning the Budget Marine Match Racing Cup. [Read more…]

The 33rd running of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta concluded today in fitting style, with staunch and steady south-southeast trade winds of 15-20 knots, seas flecked with white caps, and superb Caribbean sailing. It was one of those yachting days made for superlatives, and official scorer and “regatta guru” Paul Miller unleashed a torrent of them.

“The sparkling turquoise waters made for champagne sailing,” he said. And he was right.

On Day 3, the wind blew. And blew. First hard. And then harder. For the crews of the 202 yachts who’d descended on St. Maarten to race sailboats, it was what they’d come looking for, and it was definitely worth the wait. [Read more…]

With just over three weeks to go before action commences in the 33rd annual edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, entries continue to pour in and plans continue to firm up. The 2013 running of the event begins on February 28th with the pre-regatta tune-up series, the Gill Commodore’s Cup. With nearly 150 boats now registered, the fleet continues to grow. And some of the newest additions are some of the biggest, including Tomek Ulatowski’s Swan 100, Varsovie; John Wilson’s IMS 78, Idea; and Jan Rupert’s custom Tripp 75, Blackbird.
