Day Two of the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous, organised by Boat International Media and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, dawned with downpour – an inauspicious start after Thursday night’s Loro Piana Owner’s Dinner, where owners and distinguished guests had been entertained on the YCCS Virgin Gorda terrace by New York doo-wop group Acapella Soul.
But the rainclouds soon gave way to a searing sun and a moderate breeze that would offer the 20 sailing superyachts taking part in the racing a real tactical challenge on the day’s custom course. With the wind hovering around eight to 10 knots, the race committee decided to send the fleet on a near-figure of eight loop, first to a laid windward mark, then out to a laid reacher, then past Seal Island and round the Dog Islands before heading back to the finish line. The first day of the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous, held in the pristine waters of the British Virgin Islands, went with a bang as perfect conditions greeted both the fleet of 20 sailing superyachts and the gaggle of seven motor yachts taking part. The 2013 event is organised by Boat International Media and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
A few high clouds that drifted overhead earlier in the morning soon gave way to blue skies and sun, with a southeasterly breeze that held fairly consistently around 14 knots. “Today should be easy [for the race committee],” said Principal Race Officer Peter Craig, surveying the bay and the yachts moored on the YCCS Virgin Gorda jetty. “We have breeze, so around the island we go.” [Read more…]
An awe-inspiring regatta fleet of twenty super sailing yachts and seven luxurious motor yachts are berthed in YCCS Marina this evening in preparation for the first day of the racing at the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous.
The third edition of the event organised by Boat International Media and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has attracted a record number of sailing yachts in 2013, set to enjoy three days of racing in the idyllic conditions offered by the British Virgin Islands.
