Day Two of the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous, organised by Boat International Media and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, dawned with downpour – an inauspicious start after Thursday night’s Loro Piana Owner’s Dinner, where owners and distinguished guests had been entertained on the YCCS Virgin Gorda terrace by New York doo-wop group Acapella Soul.

But the rainclouds soon gave way to a searing sun and a moderate breeze that would offer the 20 sailing superyachts taking part in the racing a real tactical challenge on the day’s custom course. With the wind hovering around eight to 10 knots, the race committee decided to send the fleet on a near-figure of eight loop, first to a laid windward mark, then out to a laid reacher, then past Seal Island and round the Dog Islands before heading back to the finish line. YCCS Virgin Gorda welcomes impressive superyacht fleet for 2013 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

An awe-inspiring regatta fleet of twenty super sailing yachts and seven luxurious motor yachts are berthed in YCCS Marina this evening in preparation for the first day of the racing at the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous.

The third edition of the event organised by Boat International Media and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has attracted a record number of sailing yachts in 2013, set to enjoy three days of racing in the idyllic conditions offered by the British Virgin Islands. Stretching more than 30 miles along the Sir Francis Drake Channel, the BVIs are comprised of more than 60 beautiful islands set amid the sheltered, turquoise waters of the central Caribbean Sea, offering some of the most picturesque sailing in the world. The 2013 St Barths Bucket Regatta action starts on March 28. This annual yachting spectacular will feature the latest in superyacht designs along with true classics. Thirty-five yachts are ready to join the festivities and racing.  Racing begins on Thursday March 28 when five J Class yachts head for the starting line. This will be the first gathering of five or more Js since 1937!

Three more races are planned, with all yachts racing in four separate classes -Les Mademoiselles des Mers, Les Grandes Dames des Mers, Les Gazelles des Mers, and the J Class. [Read more…]

Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta – impressive fleet for 2013

Twenty one sailing superyachts and seven motor yachts have already registered for the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous taking place in Virgin Gorda (BVI) from 20 – 23 March.

The event, organized by Boat International Media and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), is sponsored by the Italian luxury brand for the second consecutive year and will host racing and social events over four days.

In a new development for 2013 and following consultation with superyacht owners, participating boats will also be able to take part in the Loro Piana Superyacht Trophy, a race which departs Virgin Gorda on 25 March headed for nearby St. Barths and the St. Barths Bucket Regatta. [Read more…]
