Day two of Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta goes to Bolero and Hanuman

Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013 day 2 – The Dogs

Day Two of the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous, organised by Boat International Media and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, dawned with downpour – an inauspicious start after Thursday night’s Loro Piana Owner’s Dinner, where owners and distinguished guests had been entertained on the YCCS Virgin Gorda terrace by New York doo-wop group Acapella Soul.

But the rainclouds soon gave way to a searing sun and a moderate breeze that would offer the 20 sailing superyachts taking part in the racing a real tactical challenge on the day’s custom course. With the wind hovering around eight to 10 knots, the race committee decided to send the fleet on a near-figure of eight loop, first to a laid windward mark, then out to a laid reacher, then past Seal Island and round the Dog Islands before heading back to the finish line. The first day of the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous, held in the pristine waters of the British Virgin Islands, went with a bang as perfect conditions greeted both the fleet of 20 sailing superyachts and the gaggle of seven motor yachts taking part. The 2013 event is organised by Boat International Media and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

A few high clouds that drifted overhead earlier in the morning soon gave way to blue skies and sun, with a southeasterly breeze that held fairly consistently around 14 knots. “Today should be easy [for the race committee],” said Principal Race Officer Peter Craig, surveying the bay and the yachts moored on the YCCS Virgin Gorda jetty. “We have breeze, so around the island we go.” [Read more…]

Merci Buckets!

By Norma Trease

As The Bard said “parting is such sweet sorrow”, and that is exactly the way everyone feels at the end of another fantastic edition of the Saint Barths Bucket. With every hug, every single-double-triple goodbye kiss, every sincere “I love you” a piece of your heart leaves with each friend and sailing companion who departs for their home ports by plane, ferry – or indeed by yacht. Yet we all know that in this world, we will all meet again, whether in another country, surely another regatta, boat show, wedding, or quay encounter in another port town. ‘Tis the nature of our biz! The upshot is that we carry with us, one and all, amazing memories of another Bucket, bigger and better than ever.
