Get Ready for the 6th Annual Budget Marine Match Racing Cup

The 6th Annual Budget Marine Match Racing Cup, an invitation only event held each year by the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, will take place on March 4, 2014.

This one-day race sails in the protected waters of the Simpson Bay Lagoon, St. Maarten on the one-design Jeanneau SunFast.

Previous race winner Colin Rathbun shares his experience of sailing on the lagoon saying, “There are a couple of hidden lanes in the madness, but it’s like match racing in a mine field!”

The BVI’s Colin Rathbun was declared BVI National Match Racing Champion and also gained an invitation to the Carlos Aguilar Match Racing Event in St Thomas on November 22 after winning the Pete Sheals Memorial Match Race event last weekend.  Six skippers participated from USA, Puerto Rico, USVI and BVI. Taylor Canfield wins Scuttlebutt Offshore Championship

Scuttlebutt Sailing reports that, “No question about it – there was something for everyone at this year’s Scuttlebutt Offshore Championship”.

Hosted by Bitter End Yacht Club (BEYC) as part of their 27th Annual Pro Am Regatta, the Mount Gay Defiance Day Series of races delivered a little bit of everything.

With resort guests crewing on all the entries, the 11-mile run down to The Baths was everything the brochure promised – bright sun, small whitecaps and perhaps 15 knots of breeze abaft the beam. Like perfect. The return leg to the BEYC was a bit more adventuresome. After a pleasant reaching start in a warm Caribbean 12-knot trade-wind, a squall passed through with gusts to 25 followed by 5-knot lulls. [Read more…]

Argo Group Gold Cup Stage 1 Qualifying Groups; USVI’s Canfield to defend title

The Argo Group Gold Cup announced today the 10-team Groups for the qualifying Round Robin of this match racing event in Bermuda.  The Argo Group Gold Cup is the penultimate fifth stage of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour, and runs from October 8th with Finals scheduled for October 13th.

Taylor Canfield, originally hailing from St Thomas, sailing for USone, the reigning Gold Cup champion, and #1 in the ISAF Open Rankings leads Group 1. Ian Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar, #2 by ISAF, current leader on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour heads up Group 2. Both are past King Edward VII Gold Cup winners.

The unranked ‘wildcard’ Sir Ben Ainslie (GBR) Ben Ainslie Racing Team (BART), sponsored by Argo Group— a two-time winner of the Gold Cup, five time Olympic medalist and 2013 America’s Cup winner— fell into Group 2 with countryman Williams. Mathieu Richard (FRA) GEFCO Match Racing Team, another previous Gold Cup winner, also landed in Group 2. [Read more…]

Taylor Canfield: Taking his talents to ‘The Show’

Sailing Scuttlebutt has run a piece on the USVI’s most recently successful sailing export, Taylor Canfield:

At 24 years, Taylor Canfield is one of the brightest stars to recently come out of the US Virgin Islands. After dominating at Boston College, closing out his intercollegiate career by winning the inaugural Match Race National Championship, Taylor is now taking his talents to “The Show”, the World Match Racing Tour.
