Caribbean Well Represented at Youth Olympic Games

The Caribbean will be well represented at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG). Several Caribbean youth will compete in this event of which takes place on Jinniu Lake in Nanjing, China, from August 18 to 23.

Puerto Rican Laser sailor Juan ‘Juanky’ Perdomo, who won a Gold medal at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship last year in Cyprus, has been named an Athlete Role Model for this summer’s YOG. Perdomo will play a key role in supporting, mentoring and offering advice to the 100 young sailors who will be competing.

 

British Virgin Islands’ Duff Wins 22nd International Optimist Regatta

11-year-old Rayne Duff from the BVI won the 22nd International Optimist Regatta hosted out of the St Thomas Yacht Club, USVI. Rayne finished with 33 points separating him from his closest competition and also won the 11 and 12-year-old Blue Fleet. Rayne will also be representing the BVI in the Optimist North American Championships in Mexico from July 9 – 16.

A total of 81 sailors competed in the Advanced Red, Blue and White Fleets and beginner Green Fleet. The Advanced Fleets completed 10 races and the Green Fleet a total of 18 races over the three days of competition. Sailors hailed from 10 nations – Antigua, Argentina, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Germany, Puerto Rico, Spain, the Netherlands, U.S.A, and all three USVI.

22nd International Optimist Regatta, Clinic & Team Race Set for June 16-22, 2014

The International Optimist Regatta (IOR) celebrates its 22nd edition, marking over two decades of fostering junior sailing in the Caribbean. Dates for the regatta and kick-off Sea Star Clinic and Sea Star Team Race are June 16th to 22nd, 2014.

Fast & Furious on Second Day of 41st St Thomas International Regatta

Courses changed but the winds remained the blustery-same as the 69-boat fleet set sail on the second day of racing at the St Thomas International Regatta (STIR). Shorter round-the-buoy and round-the-island races off the island’s east end combined with 20-plus knots of breeze enabled the race committee to fire off as many as five and four races, respectively, in the beach cat and one-design IC-24 classes. Thrills & Spills on First Day of Racing at 41st St Thomas International Regatta

Boom or bust was the big story for the 69-boat fleet racing on the first day of the 41st St Thomas International Regatta (STIR). Thirty-plus knot guests tested the mettle of equipment and crews as the fleet sailed along the island’s south shore into scenic Charlotte Amalie harbor and back again amidst a mix of sun and squalls.
